Relapse is a part of recovery

IMG_9505Hi all welcome back to my blog, I hope everyone is having a great week. I was doing some research this week for my mental health awareness series and something that I haven’t touched on yet is a part of recovery and it does happen and is very important to be aware of and that is relapses. It happens its part of the journey the difference is you can be aware of the signs and get help before the symptoms get severe, doing this can prevent an extreme relapse. This has happened to me before were I was really aware of what was happening and I go into active mode it felt really empowering I felt I had some control even though the symptoms were difficult to deal with, I had the knowledge I knew were my support was I knew the steps to take and I took control. Even though it feels like a step back when you’ve come so far, your feeling healthy and happy and it hits you, just know you got through the worst and now you have the tools to stay healthy.

I wanna talk about some of the things you can do to maintain your mental health and stay positive. To be able to stay on top of your mental health it’s important to be able to recognize when your symptoms reoccur. The first thing you may notice or even family member may notice is that your irritable, quick to anger or snapping at people for no reason. These are red flags. When your losing interest in work or daily activities, these are telltale signs that if you can recognize it early before the anxiety or negative thought take hold you’ll be able to get back on track. Have a relapse prevention place, know what you need to look for and reach out to your doctor or talk to a family member. The sooner you take these steps as hard as it can be it puts you back on track and you’re taking control. That’s strength.

There are many triggers that can cause relapses, like a death in the family, a stressful life event, reminiscing on a negative experience which our minds constantly do or a change in hormones can also trigger a change in your emotions.

But the most common reason is not maintaining your treatment plan after a depressive state. Sticking to your treatment plan will help you maintain your mental health. Every person is different, for me, it’s staying active, I work out every day and making sure I get enough sleep that’s a huge thing for me, our minds needs rest to function properly. Do what makes you feel good, focus on the positive, use your treatment plan.
