Tumor vs Cyst ….. my story pt3

IMG_9505 Here’s where my story continues,

So I got to spend some time at home before seeing my surgeon and finding out the plan, I was so tired at this point, the littlest thing was just draining for me, I got conformation over the phone that it wasn’t a cyst of fluid it was a tumor. One question was finally answered

I went into the main hospital in Dublin on a Tuesday morning, I met with two doctors, the first one really wanted to do an open surgery and take the tumor out whole which is a very invasive surgery with a 4-6 month recovery period, the reason for this is they want to remove it intact because they don’t know if it’s benign or malignant they needed to remove it without leaving any possible abnormal cells behind.

The other option is keyhole surgery which is three small incisions, they break the tumor down and suction it out, its a less invasive surgery with 4-6 week recovery time. I won’t lie I was pushing for this option cause I wanted to be back fast but my doctor really has the final decision.

So basically this is how it works, they explain it all to me then they have a meeting with other colleagues and other specialists where the look over all my scans and decide what’s the best way forward. so later that day I got the call to say they were going to go with keyhole surgery, my scans did show some grey areas but they didn’t feel it was anything to worry about. I was thrilled!! I had a plan finally and a quick recovery time I was looking forward to this being over, it was so important to stay positive and take care of my mental health at this point.

MRI SCANS ( YOU CAN SEE THE DARK AREAS THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT)

I had just a week to wait, I would have my pre-op appointment the day before surgery, it was a long the week for me, the fatigue really kicked in and i was in a little pain, i noticed it was getting bigger, and i felt a lot more pressure on my body. I had a bad feeling like I knew things would change because it was so big now and I was right, I got into pre-op and they say its too big for keyhole alone to work safely so I would have both, keyhole and open surgery, it was still less invasive than a full open surgery. At this point I didn’t care I just wanted it out.

So the new plan was to open my lower abdominal and brain the tumor outside my body so it was safe then remove it fully through keyhole surgery, at the same time they took some tissue samples from other areas.

The surgery took just over an hour, everything when well, they were really happy with how everything looked so that was a relief, I could just relax now and focus on recovery and getting healthy again.

Obviously, post-surgery I was pretty sore I couldn’t move without help, i tried to be active walking around the house but I needed help getting up and down and getting dressed the first two weeks and little things like sneezing or coughing were the most pain id ever felt.

The next step was getting my biopsy results which I had a  virtual appointment for, I didnt need to go to the hospital and I honestly was expecting to be told everything was benign and no future appointment would be needed and I was so wrong…

Thank you for reading, I have one last part I will add soon xx
