How physical health can affect your mental health

Hi all welcome back to my blog, I hope everyone is having a great week! As you can guess from the title I’m back with more content for my mental health awareness series, I have a lot of topics I want to address, this one I feel is very important, your physical health can have huge effects on your mental health. Everyday physical health that isn’t in the forefront of your mind because your life can get so hectic can be so easily disturbed and have a negative effect on your mental health.

For instance SLEEP, a lack of sleep affects your mood, it affects your motor skills, makes you irritable and anxious. losing sleep or not allowing your self enough time to recharge can have a serious effect on your mental health. Sleep is when we recharge and switch off. Our minds need rest just as much as our bodies.

Illness- when you become ill whether it be a simple flu or something more life-threatening, it triggers hormones and emotions. being impaired due to physical illness can take a toll on your mental health, it can trigger anxiety. A lot of people just get up and keep going and don’t take something like the flu or cold to seriously but it is when untreated,  your body is worn down and your immune system is low it affects your mental health. you can’t function at 100%. When it comes to a physical injury like a broken bone or torn muscle which leave you physically impaired till it heel can hit a person hard especially if they’re an athlete or extremely active, the waiting and rehab can bring you down, if your not mindful of your mental health in these occasions when you focus is so much on the physical and what you can’t do and watch the clock tick away you can spiral into depression pretty fast. It’s important to stay positive and focus on the positive improvements and how far you’ve come rather than how far you have to go.

Nutrition – The foods you put into your body doesn’t just affect you physically it effects you mentally too! Your brain is always on, it functions 24/7 which is why it requires constant fuel, what you eat it’s not just fueling your body it’s fueling your brain. In doing this its also affecting your moods. Good quality clean foods with vitamins and minerals will nourish your brain and help keep balanced. A diet of high sugar foods and processed foods will impair the function of your brain and can affect and worsen mood disorders.

Last but not least “EXERCISE” my personal favorite. studies show a lack of exercise can lead to mental health problems. You’re lacking a healthy outlet to release negative emotions that can build up. This increases the risk of depression. The smallest thing like going for a walk after work can reduce stress. the endorphins released improve your mood. You will see it a lot in studies the exercise is a great way to improve mental health. Its always recommended and i know from personal experience it does work.
