THERAPY
Hi all, welcome back to my blog, I hope everyone is having a great week. As part of my mental health awareness series I really wanted to write a piece about “therapy”. Its something I feel is really important in recovering from mental health illness. Its also a very terrifying thing to have to go through, when you’re in the darkest stage of your symptoms it’s the last thing you want to do or feel you can do. its the fear of the unknown. You think how can talking possibly help? But in fact, therapy is a safe place, it’s a safe calm envoiremnet that’s really supportive and none judgmental.
There are different types of therapy, it’s about finding what is right for you. I really just want to talk about what it is, how it can help and what are the benefits. I will try and go through individual types of therapy in a later post.
No one can tell you exactly what a therapy session is going to be like, because everyone is different. There are different issues and different needs. One part of therapy that is similar for everyone is setting or establishing goals with your therapist and find out what your willing to do to get there.
You’ll develop a relationship with your therapist a trust. Your therapist is who will support you, listen to you and give you appropriate feedback. Building this trust is really important because during this process you’ll share your deepest feelings and experiences that might have trauma connected. Digging into your past is a big part of unraveling your present in some cases and that can be scary, hard and very emotional but its essential. Your therapist will help and support you through this process. Helping you deal with the symptoms of your illness.
