Anxiety V Panic attack

Hi all welcome back to my blog, I hope everyone is having a great week. This blog post is part of my mental health awareness series. This is something iv personal had difficulty differentiating between a few years back. These to conditions are often mistaken. Gaining as much knowledge as you can about what your suffering from is always key, its a big help for me personally. When symptom arises being aware is a be a help, I’m almost hyper-aware of how my mind is reaching to my physical symptoms and it gives you a bit more control which can help bring you out of it quicker if its a panic attack or help you manage and still function if its anxiety.

In this blog, I wanna go through that topic of Anxiety v Panic Attack. There so often mistake or lumped in as the same thing just because there are similarities but there very different and often have different ways to treat. You need to be aware so you can seek the right treatment.I’m going to go through there similarities and their difference to give a clearer guideline.

Anxiety and panic attacks share some of the same symptoms

Which are :

  • Increased heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • dizziness

A Panic attack is associated with sudden fear, it comes on fast without an adverse trigger, in some cases, they can be very intense, they tend to peak after around 10 minutes then the symptoms subside, the aftermath can leave a person out of sorts for some time after.

The other symptoms a person goes through during a panic attack are chest pains, shaking/ trembling, disconnect from there surrounding and derealization. It’s an intense irrational fear that you can’t control your mind reacts to your body. The fight or flight mode is activated unnecessarily.

Anxiety is a disorder, its associated with high-stress levels and excessive worrying.     Unlike a panic attack that’s rapid and then subsides, anxiety gradually builds and can last days, week even months. There are people who live with daily anxiety. Anxiety isn’t as intense as a panic attack but it is prolonged. The other symptoms a person with anxiety deals with include disturbed sleep, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability and muscle tension.

I hope this gives a clear distinction between the two conditions, I just wanted to outline the main points in the simplest way possible, it’s really important to be able to distinguish between both to seek the right treatment that will work for you. There are great effective treatments, iv personally had all treatments and they are worth considering.

First: Therapy: Therapy is something I’m a big fan of in general, it’s so great to have a place to vent. Talking with a professional will help you develop a way to manage your symptoms and understand them better. You may find there are underlying issues that are cause you to have anxiety or panic attacks that you hadn’t realized.

Second: Medication: Medication can help reduce that more severe symptoms, it can help you gain control while you’re trying to manage your symptoms. For some, the symptoms are so severe and can take such a Toll, medication really helps you to function so you can get the help to manage your symptoms without medication. In other cases, medication can be a necessity.

Third: Self-help: self-help is how I deal with anxiety daily, for me it exercise it really relaxed me helps me focus on the “here and now” rather than the “what ifs” and “buts”.  I love to run every day, the exercise and the outdoors is an amazing healer for me. I always advise everyone to make time for exercise in their day. Meditation and yoga are also really good ways to relax and focus on yourself, clear your mind. Taking the “me time” out of your day to take care of yourself is really important.
